From the team behind the Columbo Podcast and the Blackadder Podcast comes the Jonathan Creek podcast, an affectionate retrospective of the popular BBC drama series. The show will look at each series and special of Jonathan Creek beginning with the show’s initial episode, The Wrestler’s Tomb. You can hear a short introductory episode below:

YESSSS!!!! Gerry and Iain — I’m really looking forward to this next podcasting project of yours! But expect some very harsh comments from me concerning most of the bits involving the lecherous Adam Klaus character (especially in the later episodes). Yeah, there are many times where I feel that this character and his ‘filler’ sequences are extremely lame and really bring down some of the episodes that feature ‘actor’ Stuart Milligan. Be that as it may, we all live for the puzzle box type mysteries presented in this series, right? Be seeing you! 🙂
Glad you’re looking forward to it Largo. We’re interested to hear your thoughts once it gets going!
I must confess that the most recent Jonathan Creek mystery lost out a few weeks ago to a couple of flicks featuring hot prehistoric women in leather bikinis and their encounters with dinosaurs. So it looks like things aren’t off to a very good start with this series over at ‘Largo’s Lair.’ But we shall see about all of this and more when you two lads launch your new podcast. Be seeing you! ? https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/76be396592d861e2ac3e773cc12a5e78b04041c9949e9d5a3d94d4a826a7e4bc.jpg
I will echo Largo’s “YESSSSSS!!!!” Great choice! Like Largo, there are things that bug me about the show. Yet I am still a big fan of the show and look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Thanks Steve. Not long to go now!
Some TV programmes I can watch once and am happy with or I dislike. Some I can watch, if it is on and some, like JC, I can watch over and over again. Occasionally I will go into marathon mode, I am on one now (spearfish is on as I type). In the last decade since I acquired the set I have religiously watched from start to finish at least once and possibly twice a year.
So, why? What is it about “Classic JC” that makes it so immensely enjoyable? I think two things stand out from the first 4 series and specials. Humour and Horror, the macabre sort. Some things in the first few series really were right up against the awful, the terrible, the downright yeeuch. Stabbings through the heart, impalements, stranglings and Buzz saws where the sun don’t shine. Up against that we have the mixture of subtle and then slapstick humour. Light and dark in perfect juxtaposition. Dead Elephants and Danny DeVito, savage dogs and funeral corteges…. It’s all there. In every episode (Up until the Sheridan Smith episodes anyway) you will laugh quietly to yourself as you “get” something, laugh out loud at a perfectly timed piece of visual humour, sometimes on screen sometimes in your head and then go yeeuch as something awful happens to some poor soul.
Beside the humour and horror the next key part of the show is the relationship he has with, first the fabulous Caroline Quentin as the terrible Maddy and then Julia Sawalha as the obnoxious Carla Borrego. Both potential love interests, both attracted, at first by Jonathan’s brain, and then by his lack of interest in them. I have read reviews that say they hate Maddy and can’t stand Carla, but that is the point, they are basically unlikeable but the chemistry with Jonathan is undeniably fantastic.
I know some dislike Adam Klaus, another regular side character, but to dismiss what he and his scenes bring to the show is foolhardy. Since he last appeared laughs have been few and far between and I, for one, would welcome Adam…and the windmill, back with open arms.
You will notice that I have omitted to mention much of the newer episodes. This is deliberate as my mother taught me “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all”. The chemistry has gone, the humour has gone, the macabre has gone and so my interest has waned. I haven’t laughed at JC since Gorgon’s Wood and the Carla Borrego sex doll incident. There was one bit of “The Grinning Man” that was faintly Macabre, but other than that it is a very poor shadow of it’s former self. Never mind I still have the earlier episodes once or twice a year. Alan Davies hit gold, when you find a character that is basically you anyway and get a great script, and ran with it….. Unless David Renwick can come up with some more solid ideas and re-inject his fabulously dark humour I would rather this wonderful series shuffled off our screens, leave us with the re-runs, for they are perfect. HOWEVER…. if you are watching make sure you get the full 60 minute versions and not the butchered 40 / 42 minute abominations on Netflix or Watch (a UK TV station) these have been so badly edited as to make some plot points make no sense whatsoever.
Good luck with your podcast boys, not many shows (Foyle’s War, Green Wing, Life on Mars) engender this kind of love. At it’s height JC is up there with the very best.
Much more than the sum of it’s parts, it is that rare programme of synergy, from the disreputable Adam, to the selfish Maddy, to the dithering Jonathan and not forgetting the dead Elephant. Take one plank away and the show loses something. The proof is in the last 7 episodes…
Thanks Chris, that’s great feedback already. We’ll certainly make sure we’re using the longer versions.
Apologies for taking a little while to get back to you, we’ve just been wrapping up work on Sledgecast and getting set up to start on this show. Hopefully you’ll be around to comment on the episodes as we go through them!
Couldn’t say a thing about the series any better than you just did, Chris, so I’ll say “Ditto!” and leave it at that. 🙂
Oh goody! You are going to be covering another murder mystery series! Yay! I haven’t watched any of the Jonathan Creek episodes yet, so all of this will be a kind of learning experience for me. I’m vaguely aware of this show, but I’m still looking forward to listening to your podcasts about it. However, I’m somewhat leery of this ‘Adam Klaus’ character that Largo mentions in his comment. This Klaus guy sure sounds like a creeper. EEK! Ta ta for now, boys! 🙂
First off, I’m absolutely loving the previous Columbo podcast. I’ve been a fan of the show and Peter Falk for many years. I managed to obtain a signed photo of Peter just before his unfortunate death, which I now cherish. I’m re-watching the DVDs and I’m up to season 3 on both the episodes and your podcast. I’ve recently watched all the Jonathan Creek episodes, I’m a huge fan of that too, so I’m now starting this new pod cast. Excellent work lads! I don’t know how familiar you are with these shows, or if you even like them, but if so I’d love to see a possible podcast on these: Boon and Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Take care lads, keep the podcasts coming.

PS just found the Sledgehammer podcast too. Another classic show. I’ve got plenty of listening to do. Many thanks.
Thanks Lee. Not seen much (any) of the shows you’ve listed, but who knows what the future holds!
